Safety Tips: Thanksgiving

Safety Tips: Thanksgiving

Did You Know? More than 13 million Americans will travel to spend the holiday season with friends and family.  This will leave homes empty for opportunistic burglars.

Additionally, for both those traveling or staying home:  Thanksgiving is the leading day for home fires involving cooking equipment, with three times the average number throughout the year.

Follow these important Thanksgiving Safety Tips to ensure your family is safe this holiday season!

Happy Thanksgiving from United Services Group to all our co-workers, friends, family, and customers!  We hope you all have a safe and enjoyable holiday.

Thanksgiving Fire Safety Practices and Tips:
  • Be sure to keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen in case of emergency.  Additionally, make sure family members know how to use it, in case of emergency.
  • Be cautious when using turkey fryers as they pose a number of distinct safety concerns, including burns and fire hazards.
  • Never wear loose fitting clothing when cooking.  Long, open sleeves could ignite and catch fire from a gas flame or oven burner.  Wear short, close fitting, or tightly rolled sleeves when cooking.

Safe Traveling Practices and Safety Tips:
  • Remove objects that might allow access to your home (Ladders, etc.)
  • Do not post Thanksgiving travel plans publically on social media letting people know that you will be out of town and that your home is empty.
  • Turn your telephone ringer down or off to prevent repeated rings to be heard outside of the home.
  • Make sure to have all mail, newspaper, and deliveries stopped or picked by a neighbor, friend, or relative.
  • Never leave a key hidden outside.  Burglars know all the best hiding places.
  • Secure all windows in the home, cut back any trees giving access to second story windows.
  • Use timers to operate your lights while you are gone.
  • Have a neighbor keep an eye out on your home for any suspicious activity.
  • Before leaving on your trip, make sure all doors, including garage doors, are secure and locked.

Half A Million Hours with Zero Lost Time

CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA (November 15, 2016)  – United Services Group has surpassed a half a million (500,000) man hours without any lost-time accident or recordable injuries.  Beginning when United Services Group opened its doors in September 2013, United has made safety our most important company core value and vision.  We have made a company commitment to safety and our work performance is driven by this responsibility daily.

“We are thankful to reach this milestone within our organization, but the credit belongs to our tremendous team.” Josh Armstrong, Chief Executive Officer, said.  “We encourage each member of our team to take a hands-on approach while they are on our job-sites.  The teams of craft personnel we employ are safety-minded individuals who help us prevent accidents before they happen.  It’s because of their commitment that we were able to reach this milestone.”

United Services Group is committed to safety excellence on all of our job-sites.  The vision of all projects being accident-free projects starts at the very top of our organization with our owners, Josh Armstrong and Stephen Gillman.  Through their message, our employees work performance is driven by their responsibility to a safety-first mentality.

Stephen Gillman, Chief Operating Officer on the milestone stated “Our safety culture is a reflection of the people we employ.  Safety is a team effort which requires daily buy-in from every member of our organization.  I am always pleased to sit down with our customers and partners and tell them that their projects are being performed by the safest team in the industry.”

Our safety commitment is to our employees, our customers, and the environment.  We will never waver on our mission to deliver safety excellence in all aspects of our organization.

Thank you to every member of Team United who has taken part in helping us achieve this milestone.  Though we are very thankful for the first 500,000 consecutive hours without a lost-time injury, our mission isn’t over.  Please continue to strive for to provide the safest work in the industry.  Continue to start each job with one simple question:  Is this task as safe as it can be?

Safety Tips: Flu Prevention

Safety Tips: Flu Prevention

Did You Know? The flu virus can live on hard surfaces for up to 24 hours and soft surfaces for 15 minutes.  The flu is a common infectious disease caused by the influenza viruses.  The flu usually affects a person’s breathing system.

The Center for Disease Control estimates between 5-20% of the people in the United States get the flu each year, and more than 200,000 are hospitalized due to complications.

Most people recover from the flu in several days and usually less than two weeks.  However, the flu tends to be passed around in the workplace during the fall and winter months.  To help prevent getting the flu, think about getting a flu vaccination.

Flu Symptoms & Complications:
  • Fever or feeling feverish/chills
  • Cough
  • Sore Throat
  • Runny or Stuffy nose
  • Muscle or Body Aches
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue or Tiredness
  • Vomiting and Diarrhea (more common in children)

How does the flu spread?

The flu spreads through wet drops produced when a person coughs, sneezes or talks.  A person can get the flu by breathing in these drops or by touching items services containing the virus and then touching their mouth, nose, or eyes.

A person can spread the flu starting one day before they feel sick.  Adults can continue to pass the flu virus to others for another 3-7 days, after symptoms start.  Children can pass the virus for longer than 7 days.  Symptoms can start 1-4 days after the virus enters the body.  Some people can be infected with the flu virus but show no symptoms.  During these times, those people can still spread the virus to others.

Safety Work Practices & Tips:
  • CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine as the first and most important step in protecting against flu viruses.
  • Don’t go to work when a fever or any other flu symptoms are present.
  • Practice good hygiene and wash your hands with soap and water frequently.
  • Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
  • Use natural remedies like daily vitamins, vitamin C, and zinc to boost your immune system.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Wash your hands or utilize hand sanitizer before and after eating.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.  Germs spread quickly this way.
  • Take available medication to help treat the flu and help manage the symptoms.

Welding Conference Recap

CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA (SEPTEMBER 30, 2016) – On September 21, 2016, United Services Group participated in the third annual Welding and Heat Technology Conference presented by Miller Welding in Houston, Texas.

Our owners, Josh Armstrong and Stephen Gillman, were invited by Mike Lang of Fluor, to speak as part of the keynote presentation on “New Risks and New Rewards in Welding along the Gulf Coast”.   Their portion of the presentation focused on recognizing split scope opportunities and when to consider outsourcing work to a specialty contractor.

The presentation covered the risk assessment of a general contractor, the impact of rework, safety and quality on a project, and how specialty contractors could help control these factors while providing value to general contractors on a project.

“We were able to communicate the value of a specialty contractor to the audience.  Being able to provide general contractors with a specialty service that focuses on safety and quality, really provides them a lot of value.”  Stephen Gillman said following the conference.  “We were able to show the audience and GCs (general contractors) that they really save long term in scheduling, cost, and safety by outsourcing to a specialty contractor.”

Following the conference, United Services Group CEO, Josh Armstrong said “this was overall a great experience.  We were able to provide value to everyone who walked through the door for the conference, which makes it all worthwhile.  We are thankful to Mike (Lang), Scott (Witkowski), Chris (Goocher), and Miller for allowing us to be a part of the conference.”

He concluded, “we work daily to provide our clients with service excellence and I think that came through with our presentation. The benefit of a specialty contractor is the value they bring to the project. That value is exceptional safety, quality, accountability, and effective work.  It was easy to preach these things because this is what we provide every day in our business.”

As a company, United Services Group was honored to take part in the 3rd Annual Welding and Heat Treating Technology keynote presentation and to be able to provide value as an industry expert.  We want to thank Mike Lang and Chris Goocher with Fluor and Scott Witkowski with Maverick Testing Laboratories for allowing us this opportunity.

Additionally, working with our customers on multiple projects, we are able to provide them a level of comfort knowing our business and team from the inside out.
